The 60-second oxygen safety scan: five checks before every chamber session

Posted September 11, 2026·Prestige Hyperbaric

A practical five-point preflight for calmer hyperbaric chamber operations: room readiness, clean surfaces, oxygen awareness, controls, and clear communication.

A documentary look at the calm, repeatable preflight that sets the room up for a better session.

Safety does not have to feel dramatic. The best chamber routines are often quiet, repeatable, and a little boring in the best possible way. Before every session, a one-minute oxygen-safety scan helps the operator confirm that the room, the chamber, the controls, and the people around them are ready to work together.

This is not a substitute for your site procedures, training, or the requirements that apply to your facility. It is a practical reset from the Prestige workshop: five checks that help turn “we should be good” into “we looked, we confirmed, and we know the next step.”

1. Start with the room, not the start button

Take a quick look around the chamber area before anyone climbs in. Keep the floor clear, the access path open, and the space free of loose items that could be forgotten once a session begins. Check that the chamber is positioned as planned and that the surrounding workspace is clean, dry, and easy to move through.

A clear room is more than good housekeeping. It gives the operator better sight lines, makes communication easier, and keeps the session from starting with a last-second scramble. Calm is a safety feature.

2. Confirm clean, appropriate surfaces

Inspect the chamber touch points and nearby work surfaces. Use the cleaning products and process approved for your equipment, allow surfaces to dry as directed, and keep fabrics and materials consistent with your facility’s operating procedure. Pay attention to anything that has been added since the last session.

The goal is a clean, predictable setup—not a pile of improvised accessories. When every item has a place and the operator knows why it is there, the room is easier to reset and easier to hand off to the next trained person.

3. Read the oxygen story of the room

Oxygen awareness is not just looking at one gauge. Check the oxygen supply, connections, tubing, ventilation and purge expectations, and the condition of the equipment you will actually use. Verify that nothing is kinked, pinched, loose, or routed in a way that creates confusion.

For wellness centers building toward NFPA 99 expectations, the Prestige NFPA 99 Compliance Kit can help organize the bonding, grounding, monitoring, and documentation conversation with the qualified professionals responsible for your site. Standards work is strongest when it is documented, understood, and matched to the room.

4. Put your hand on the controls and follow the sequence

Before the session begins, confirm that the operator can identify the controls, gauges, communications path, and emergency procedure. Run the normal preflight in the same order each time. If something reads differently than expected, pause and resolve it before moving on.

Consistency is where training becomes muscle memory. Prestige technicians spend a lot of time on this practical stuff because a chamber should feel understandable to the people who operate it. We design improvements around real rooms, keep parts close, and explain the why—not just the button sequence.

5. Make the handoff obvious

End the scan with a simple verbal confirmation between the operator and the person entering the chamber. Confirm the session plan, the communication method, what to do if something feels off, and who is watching the controls. A clear handoff gives everyone the same picture before the door closes.

Keep personal electronics such as phones, laptops, and watches out of chambers. If installed powered accessories such as red light, PEMF, or LED equipment are part of a setup, use is at the customer’s own risk. Prestige never claims installed electronics are 100% safe in an oxygen-enriched environment and never endorses personal electronics inside a chamber. Read our electronics disclaimer before making a decision.

Make safety feel like confidence

The 60-second scan is small, but the habit compounds. A clear room, clean surfaces, oxygen awareness, a familiar control sequence, and a real handoff can make the whole operation feel more capable. That is the point: not fear, not theater, just a process people can repeat.
