35 Trials, 3,036 Patients: A New Review Looks at HBOT After Stroke

Posted October 27, 2026·Prestige Hyperbaric

A fresh meta-analysis pooled 35 randomized trials on hyperbaric oxygen added to stroke rehab. The scores moved in a good direction, the authors were refreshingly honest about the limits, and the lesson for every chamber program is one we already live by: show up, stay consistent, do it right.

Thirty-five randomized trials. 3,036 patients. One big question: does adding hyperbaric oxygen to standard stroke care help with thinking and memory afterward? A new systematic review and meta-analysis published October 13, 2026 in Frontiers in Neurology pulled together every randomized trial the authors could find on adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen for post-stroke cognitive impairment. It is one of the largest looks at this question so far, and it is worth a Tuesday coffee read.

Illustrative chamber b-roll created for this research commentary; it is not footage from the cited review or a customer installation.

What the researchers did

The team, led by Xiaosai Hu and colleagues, registered their plan in advance with PROSPERO and searched eight research databases, from PubMed and Embase to the major Chinese databases, through July 15, 2026. Every trial they included compared a group receiving their usual stroke care plus hyperbaric oxygen against a group receiving the same usual care without it. That design matters, because it isolates what the chamber sessions add on top of medication, physical rehab, cognitive rehab, or acupuncture. Read the full review in Frontiers in Neurology.

Most protocols ran at about 2.0 ATA, with sessions of roughly 60 to 120 minutes and courses of 10 to 40 sessions. These were hospital protocols for a medical condition, prescribed and supervised by physicians. That is a different lane from home and wellness use, and we will keep it that way.

What they found

Across all 35 trials, the groups that added hyperbaric oxygen scored higher on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, by about 2.9 points on average. In the 26 trials that used the Mini-Mental State Examination, scores were about 2.7 points higher. The review also reported better scores on a standard stroke-severity scale and on two everyday-living scales that measure tasks like dressing, eating, and getting around. The benefit showed up whether hyperbaric oxygen was paired with medication, physical rehab, cognitive rehab, or acupuncture.

Then comes the part we genuinely respect. The authors rated the certainty of the evidence as low to very low, noted a lot of variation between studies, pointed out that every included trial was run in China, and said plainly that the current evidence does not support routine use in every stroke patient. Their call to action is larger, well-designed trials with diverse populations, long-term follow-up, and careful safety tracking. Encouraging signal, honest limits, clear next step. That is how good science is supposed to read.

Why consistency is an equipment story too

Look at those protocols again: 20, 30, sometimes 40 sessions. Whatever the goal, structured hyperbaric programs are built on repetition. A course only works as designed when the chamber is ready every single day, the seals are healthy, the filters are fresh, and the person running it knows the routine cold.

That is exactly what our Holiday, Florida workshop is built around. Our engineers design our own improvements, we keep parts on hand so routine care never turns into a waiting game, and we train every owner on startup, pressurization, ear-equalization coaching, daily checks, and oxygen safety basics. Reliability, safety, and function are not slogans here. They are what make a steady schedule possible, session after session.

For wellness centers building a more structured program, our NFPA 99 Compliance Kit helps teams organize the documentation, logs, and procedures that keep a busy day running smoothly from the first session to the last.

Prestige’s take: keep it in the right lane

Prestige chambers are wellness equipment, and we keep our claims in that lane. Stroke recovery belongs with a physician and a rehab team, and the sessions in this review were delivered in hospital settings under medical supervision. If you or someone you love is recovering from a stroke, talk with the care team before adding anything new. What we take from this research is the bigger, universal lesson: great hyperbaric programs are built on consistency, clear protocols, and well-kept equipment.

Bottom line: 35 trials point in an encouraging direction, the researchers were upfront about what still needs proving, and the practical takeaway for chamber owners is the same one we preach every day. Show up, stay on schedule, keep the machine right. Educational commentary only; this article is not medical advice.
